Yo La Tengo

Just say no!

They are obviously very gifted and talented musicians, but their "feel good" music makes me want to run out and mow down some kittens or something.

NO La Tengo?

That's some funny s**t right there....

You've got alot of my favs on your list. Bet we have alot in common musically. I was HUGE into Tragically Hip for awhile. Their first two albums were dynamite. They seemed a little too polished, and 'studio' on their third though. Havn't checked out too much since then.
I see you have Queens of the Stoned (heh) Age on there. Have you heard Eagles of Death Metal yet? I did a post about them awhile ago (and was ripped handily for it). It's a side project of the guitarist's, only he plays drums with them. They got this whole white-trash-sex-machine schtick going on. They were the band in this video I posted for RMP. You posted in the thread, so you must've seen it.

For reals? You coming to town? That'd be sweet. Bella's a great place to start on the quest to get arrested. Oh, and Sunny and Brandon just got a BMW, so maybe he'll drive.

I knew you were cool Roady when you realized my name, Midnight Rambler, was a Stones song.

I like that song by EODM, their persona almost reminds me of Zodiac Mindwarp and the Love Reaction. Fun and Trashy. I'll have to dig into that a bit more. Very Happy

Almost forgot, for anyone that likes Punk music, check out The Hives (I would start with the album Veni Vidi Vicious).

Kinda funny how some Swedes can out Punk most US Punk bands.

I picked that one up awhile ago, on WHITE VINYL no less :). It's one of the bands that got me checking out my 'roots', along with The WHite Stripes, and The Strokes.

Ya know, I've heard of those "record" things but I didn't realize people still listened to them. Wink

I was one of the first of my friends to be all over CD's when they first started making an appearence. It just seemed like such a good idea. No more 'pops' and 'hissing' in the background. The size, convenience, and universal format (no need for records at home, and tapes in the car) was another strong point for them. I quickly became a huge proponent of the new format.
While working at a audio video chain a long time ago, I got into an arguement, about CD's vs. records with another employee. His arguement, was that good 'ol record albums actually had better frequency response, than a CD. I couldn't accept this, but without any real evidence, I had little to back up my oppinion. To this day, I can't tell you if he was in fact right. What I can share, is an experience, that convinced me, that records do, in fact, sound better than CD's.
A good friend of mine, was what I would consider to be an audiophile. He was just starting down that long dark road at the time, but has always been very into music. This was back when we were living at home, and could spend gobs of money on things we didn't really need. He was always into really nice gear, and quickly ammassed a small fortune in home stereo equipment. He never settled either. He was always upgrading. Once he had a great system, he'd start looking for somehow else to upgrade. I think he must've gone through about 10 sets of speakers, in about 2 years, always looking for something a little better. He'd buy brands that most people would never hear of, and assume they were some off-brand. At one point, he was running two sepaerate power amps, in mono, one for the left channel, one for the right. He was the one, that really convinced me of the superior sound quality of vinyl (records), as long as...
1.You have a record in good condition. Alot of people aren't (weren't) aware of how important a well balanced (and good quality) stylus is. An out of balace stylus will prematurely wear the groove in your recording causing distortion. A low quality stylus will do the same. This dude bought very high quality styluses, spending more money on them, than I would on my whole system probably.
2. Records need to be clean, and cleaned. The old Discwasher record cleaner is an audiophile's best friend. I always thought it some sort of gimick, but periodically (basically every time you play it) cleaning your record dramatically helps the sound quality (and longevity) of your records. I was told, and took his word for it, that for all the dust you see on a record, there are even smaller unseen bits, that will end up in the records groove, building up over time, and causing a loss of sound quality. For the real elite audiophile, you can spend thousands on commercial record cleaning systems.
3. You're listening on a high quality system. A good turntable ( I can't even remember the brand he finally settled on) good amp, and good speakers is just as important as the above things. On a lower quality system, you might not be able to hear the diference.

But, what really convinced me, was just listening. It was The Beatles 'White' album. Side-by-side, CD, versus record album. Granted, it was on my friends high-end system, and I was right in the 'sweet-spot'. But when played side-by-side, one right after another, (I think I closed my eyes too, to see if I could tell the difference) there was definatly a difference. It isn't a very noticable difference, but it's there. And, it's hard to explain, or put my finger on it. I settle on the word 'warmth'. The digital media is colder, almost more mechanical, where the record was warmer, more organic. I liken it to the difference between seeing a band live, versus hearing them on any recorded media.

The bottom line, is that for me, and the average music listener, it is hardly worth the extra time, money, and hassle, to gain a little sound quality. Even my friend had an extensive CD library. He listens to music in the car, and some things just can't be bought on vinyl. Back then, it was also pretty impossible to make CD copies at home. Nowadays, it is pretty simple, and there's alot of artists still releasing their stuff on vinyl. So, what I decided to do, was to do all my buying on vinyl. When I go record shopping, I go RECORD shopping. It's a bit of an inconveniece, since I can't just pop out to Best Buy, or Circuit City, but I actually have alot more fun going to one of the local record shops and hunting through the stacks. Some records will cost a premium too. I have yet to get a copy of Wolfmother's album, since it was an import, and I believe they wanted around $30 for it, maybe more. The plus side, is that many of my records actually appreciate in value. Ween is a great example. Copies of their older albums routinely sell for over $100 on ebay. The other thing I like to do, is buy colored vinyl. It sometimes add to the collectiblity/value, but mostly it's just for fun. I posted a pictue awhile back, of a record by The Fall I got, that was a black and white marbled vinyl. Really cool looking. Or my copy of 'Pauls Boutique', a huge multi-gatefold, that opens up about 6 times to create an enormous panoramic picture of the artwork. You just don't get that from a CD.

BTW, I got my turntable (Denon with stylus, though I don't know how good of a stylus) at Goodwill for $15. The RCA cables were bad, but that was an easy fix for me. They are few, and far between, but occasionally you can find a gem there.

Here is some of the music I like to listen to in the car.

In Flames - Leeches
In Flames - Reflect the storm
Cky - Shock and Terror
Nonpoint - Move now
Atreyu - Lip Gloss and Black
Black Label Society - Conterfiet God
Black Label Society - Stillborn (Feat Ozzy Osbourne)

Milder stuff that I like to listen to when things are calm and quiet

Black Label Society - Just Killin' Time
Cky - Close yet far (one of my favorites)
Seether - Fine again (Acoustic, from "One Cold Night")
Harry Chapin - Cats in the cradle

And, the only songs that literally gives me chills. It brings back memories of my first Ozzfest. I was standing in a sea of 30,000+ people all chanting "Play" as it does in the song. Simply amazing
Ozzy Osbourne - Mr Cowley (Live)
