64 bit OS or stay with 32 bit?

If a guy were to build a new system today which would be the better route to go, and why?

It has nothing to do with what is better per say but what you NEED.

Any machine with 4 GB or more of RAM, NEEDS 64 bit to be able to use it. 32bit only works with up to 3.5, it will ignore everything else after it.

Now 32 bit is technically "more compatible" but 64 bit works with 99% of the new stuff in the last 2-3 years. So unless you are in a corporate environment working with custom programs that use direct kernal calls and random crap like that, go 64, especially if you have 4 GB or more.

Now be aware, not all old hardware has 64 bit drivers. IE printers from like over 3 years back, etc. You will need to replace that stuff most likely if you go to 64 bit, but if you are getting a brand new system you will likely have brand new everything which will work with 64 bit. Windows 7 pushed 64 bit to the forefront in that aspect.

I would say that if you are going to be getting a new system go 64bit. I've been playing Dark Forces *original dos game* and other extremely old games on Win 7 64bit. I just can't see a reason not to go 64bit OS. I also found the 64bit OS tends to be faster in my opinion. Just my 2cents. What are you planning on doing?

I have had no compatibility issues and i'm pushing 9 Gigs of ram.

Oh, I'm a while away from buying a new system yet, just curious about the general consensus.

RMP, I haven't seen a game yet that needed 9 gigs of memory, ha ha. What do you use your computer for? Gene sequencing? Making Pixar movies?

How do you have 9 GB of RAM? what kinda configuration is that? Does it break dual channel / triple channel advantages?

I have three 2's and three 1's.
The 2s are Hyper X and 1s are stock. I would probably be better using just the 6.
I have no idea of any advantages, just like the sound of it. Very Happy

All the new intel motherboards have 2 pairs with 3 slots each.

what really? I thought they came in sets of 2,3, or 4. I've never seen 6, is that considered 2 sets of triple channel memory then?
